What is LED Light Therapy?

LED Light Therapy, or photo-biomodulation, is a non-invasive light treatment that stimulates skin energy production, improves healing, reduces inflammation, and promotes collagen synthesis for overall skin rejuvenation and glow. At Anova Skin Clinic, we use the clinically proven Omnilux Medical LED System with two specialised treatment heads – Omnilux Revive delivering 633nm red light for skin rejuvenation and epidermal repair, and Omnilux Plus delivering 830nm infrared light for deeper dermal stimulation and healing. LED Light Therapy is an effective standalone treatment that causes no heat response in the skin; however, at Anova Skin Clinic we recommend combining it with other aesthetic treatments such as Nd:YAG Laser Treatment, IPL Rejuvenation and Microneedling to speed up skin recovery and significantly enhance treatment results.

What is LED Light Therapy?

MECHANISM How Does LED Light Therapy Works?

LED Light Therapy – also called low-level light therapy or photobiomodulation – uses light energy at a specific wavelength to stimulate skin cell biological activity. The light is absorbed by skin cells, triggering a cascade of biochemical reactions that stimulate cellular energy production leading to skin repair and regeneration. At Anova Skin Clinic we use Omnilux Medical LED System to deliver two clinically proven wavelengths – 633nm red and 830nm infrared – for comprehensive skin rejuvenation and healing.

Red Light Therapy Action for Skin Rejuvenation

  • Red light at 633nm is absorbed by an enzyme called Cytochrome C Oxidase found in mitochondrial membranes of cellular walls
  • A complex photo-chemical reaction is triggered, activating cellular metabolic processes
  • Cellular energy production – adenosine triphosphate (ATP) – is significantly increased
  • Function of keratinocytes cells in the epidermis and fibroblasts cell in the dermis is notably enhanced.

Infrared Light Therapy Action for Skin Rejuvenation

  • Infrared light at 830nm is primarily absorbed by photoreceptors on skin cell membranes
  • A complex photo-mechanical reaction is trigger activating cellular metabolic processes
  • Cellular energy production – Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) – is significantly increased
  • Function of skin immune cells, keratinocytes cells in the epidermis, and fibroblasts cell in the dermis is notably enhanced.

Results For Red And Infrared LED Light Therapy

The result of both red and infrared Omnilux Medical LED is a photoactivated skin cell environment of increased growth, repair, and remodelling – leading to decreased skin inflammation, improved skin barrier integrity, enhanced collagen and elastin production for a smoother, more radiant and glowing skin.

Understanding Omnilux Medical Difference – Competitor LED devices & At Home LED Masks

Omnilux Medical is built to medical-grade specifications, has undergone rigorous clinical testing and has been the gold standard of LED Light Therapy for medical and aesthetic applications worldwide since 2003. With more than 40 peer-reviewed published studies, Omnilux Medical has extensive clinical validation of both the wavelengths used and the dosages delivered at the strength required to produce results. Each Omnilux Medical treatment head contains a single wavelength of densely packed LEDs – ensuring the clinically proven dose of light is delivered evenly across the entire treatment area with no zones of undertreated skin (image below).

Competitor LED devices and at-home LED masks commonly combine multiple wavelengths with widely spaced LEDs in one device or mask (image below) – reducing the intensity and consistency of light reaching skin cells and compromising treatment outcomes.

LED Light Treatment Experience

RESULTS What Results Can I Expect from LED Light Therapy?

LED Light Therapy delivers progressive results including improvements in skin tone, texture and firmness with reduced redness, strengthened skin barrier, and smoother fine lines for more healthy, rejuvenated and glowing skin.

When Can I See Results from LED Light Therapy?

  • When Used as a Standalone Treatment: Some individuals notice an energising or calming effect on the skin immediately after treatment. Progressive improvements in skin tone, texture and firmness develop over the course of 8 treatments, with results beginning at 2-3 weeks and continuing for several months after the course is completed.
  • When Used as an Add-On: When combined with Nd:YAG Laser Treatment, IPL Rejuvenation or Microneedling, LED Light Therapy accelerates skin recovery and healing, reduces downtime and significantly enhances the rejuvenation results of the primary treatment.

How Long Will the Results from LED Light Therapy Last?

Longevity of results will vary depending on skin type, lifestyle and whether LED Light Therapy has been done as a package of treatment or combined with other treatments. A maintenance LED treatment every 4-6 weeks is generally recommended to prolong and sustain results.

⚠️Results are progressive, cumulative and individual – outcomes vary depending on skin condition, age, lifestyle, skincare routine and number of treatments received.

NORMAL RESPONSE What Does LED Light Therapy Feel Like?

  • Omnilux Plus – 830nm Infrared Light: painless and relaxing with a gentle warmth as the light is delivered. The near-infrared light is invisible to the naked eye, making it a comfortable, eyes-closed experience.
  • Omnilux Revive – 633nm Red Light: painless and relaxing with a gentle warmth as the light is delivered. ⚠️The red light is visible and intensely bright – some individuals may find this brightness uncomfortable even with protective eye goggles

How Does Skin Feel After LED Light Therapy?

Skin feels refreshed and energised immediately after treatment. A mild, temporary rednes and warmth may occur in some individuals, resolving quickly after.

DOWNTIME What Is the Downtime After Microneedling?

There is no downtime, only mild redness which dissipates quickly after treatment. LED Light Therapy is completely non-invasive – you can return to normal activities, skincare and makeup immediately after treatment.

⚠️When used as an add-on prior to or following Nd:YAG Laser Treatment, IPL Rejuvenation, or Microneedling, any downtime experienced is associated with the primary treatment – not the LED.

PROTOCOL How Many LED Light Treatments Do I Need and How Often?

⚠️Treatment protocol is customised to your skin concern, skin condition and desired outcomes. Your clinician will recommend the most appropriate plan during consultation.

  • When Used as a Standalone Treatment: A course of 8 treatments, twice a week over 4 weeks, is recommended for optimal results, followed by a one maintenance treatment every 2-6 weeks to sustain and prolong achieved results.
  • When Used as an Add-On: LED Light Therapy can be used prior to or following Nd:YAG Laser Treatment, IPL Rejuvenation or Microneedling to accelerate recovery, reduce downtime and enhance rejuvenation results.

COST & DURATION How Much Does LED Light Treatment Cost & How Long Does It Take?

At Anova Skin Clinic, a standalone LED Light Therapy session lasts 30 minutes and costs $99 including skin cleanse, 20-minute Omnilux Medical LED treatment, finishing with application of corrective serum and hydrating mask.

LED Light Therapy is available as an Add-on 20-minute service for $50 prior to or following Nd:YAG Laser Treatment or IPL Rejuvenation.
